100 YEARS OF MINNA: GOV ALIYU SETS UP COMMITTEE FOR ANNIVERSARY

The Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has inaugurated a 17-member committee for the centenary celebration of Minna, the State Capital.

Governor Aliyu said at the occasion that the celebration of the 100th year of Minna is actually the celebration of Niger Province and Niger State, which has become the fulcrum, the centre of economic activity for virtually all the linguistic configurations in the country.

“Every Nigerlite has a stake in Minna being the State Capital, and we must understand that otherwise we will miss the whole essence of the cosmopolitan nature of the town and how we have come this long”, he further stated.

He said people must appreciate the rapid growth of Minna town stressing that the celebration is aimed at reminding the people of the milestones reached and provide a documentation of who we are, where we are and where we are aspiring to be.

Dr. Aliyu charged the committee to visit all the emirate councils in the State to integrate some of their history because they have also contributed to the growth of Minna. He also urged it not to shy away from “the dark part of history as it will contribute and enrich the general knowledge about the town”.

The Governor directed the committee to, among others, commission an inspiring write-up on the history of Minna such that people would “want to know who they are and what they stand for”. He said the whole essence of this is to know our background to be able to estimate our development as we go along.

Responding, the Chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barrister Abdullahi Bawa, thanked the Chief Servant for yet another opportunity and previledge to serve Nigerlites.

He stated that one of the benefits of the centenary celebration is that it would reduce friction among the peoples of the locality stressing that it would assist greatly in resolving boundary and communal disputes that may come up in the near future.

The Chairman promised that the committee would carry out its responsibility diligently and also assured that it would not disappoint the government and people of the State.

The Committee has the Director General, Niger House Centre for Historical Research and Documentation, Malam Nuhu Galadima as Deputy Chairman. Other members include; Commissioners of Finance, Higher Education, the Secretaries for General Services, Science and Technology, Political, Special Duties, Health, Environment, the Director General, Ward Development Project, Director General, Human Rights, two Local Government Chairmen from Zones A and C. The Secretary of the committee is Malam Ahmed Mohammed Datti while Mallam Yahuza Abdullahi is the Assistant Secretary of the Committee.
