COMMISSION OF INQUIRY IS TO SET A STANDARD - GOV ALIYU
The Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has said that the idea of setting up a commission of inquiry in the State was not to witch-hunt anybody, but to set a standard which Nigerlites will be proud of.
Governor Aliyu made the statement at the Government House, Minna when he was receiving the reports of the Commission of Inquiry which was set up to investigate allegations of corruption and malpractices against Kontagora Local Government Council of the State.
He explained that the Commission was properly established to send a message to the rest of the local government councils and other government establishments in the State, on the determination of the government towards ensuring probity and accountability over the application of public funds entrusted to both elected and appointed officers.
The Chief Servant stressed that public officers must appreciate the opportunity given to them by God to serve humanity and that efforts must be made by government officials to do their best in this direction. He said government will set up a committee to look into the recommendations, and that the reports will be sent to the State House of Assembly in accordance with the laws of the local government to enable the House adopt the reports for subsequent implementation by the government.
Governor Aliyu then thanked members of the Commission for their fairness in handling the assignment, which he noted was devoid of complaints.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Amina Wambai commended the government for the support given to the commission towards the successful completion of the assignment, adding that throughout its sittings, the commission enjoyed freedom from interference by the State Government.
Justice Wambai also said that the Commission was established for the determination of malpractices and wastages in the Kontagora Local Government Council, and that in the course of its investigation, the commission visited 13 project sites, received 147 exhibits admitted as evidence, while evidences were also taken from 47 witnesses.
She said the Commission was transparent in its public hearings and was fair to all parties having interest in the inquiry. Justice Wambai stated that the Commission spent extra hours to enable it meet the deadline and thanked God for enabling them complete the assignment.
