CONDEMNABLE ACTS OF EXTREMISM

The Chief Servant, Governor of Niger State and Chairman of Northern Governors’ Forum, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, OON (Talban Minna) condemns in strong words, the acts of arson, vandalism and religious intolerance and extremism by some youths in some states in the North.

Dr Aliyu said the acts which were reported in Bauchi, Borno and Kano States targeted Government facilities and infrastructures. He said it is most unfortunate that such acts are being carried out at this time when our national resources and general financial capabilities are low occasioned by the global economic recession which consequently diminishes the country’s resources. The little available resources which should therefore be used for the provision of more facilities to improve our socio-economic lives are unfortunately to be channeled to replace damaged or destroyed facilities. Dr Aliyu is further pained that these regrettable acts are being carried out by our youths who should rather be engaged in efforts to move the nation forward as leaders of tomorrow.

The Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum further regrets the loss of lives in the crisis and calls for calm as relevant Government agencies are on top of the situation to return calm to the affected communities. He also endorses the measures so far announced and taken by the Federal Government and its agencies in this direction.

Dr Aliyu wishes to seize this opportunity to call on religious, traditional, political and social leaders to take appropriate measures to maintain calm and peace in their various communities and nip any potential threat to peace in the bud.

Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu also notes that the North has experienced several acts of violence from which nothing positive came. Rather, the region was further pushed back into deprivation, under-development, poverty, ignorance and the like. Now is the time for complete unity and peace that will enable our people enjoy the good things of life under a democratic government.

Peace is a necessary prerequisite to any form of development in a democracy. We must all make concerted efforts in ensuring that peace reigns in our respective communities, Dr Aliyu concludes.
